IELTS Test Structure
IELTS Academic Test: For Higher Education.
The IELTS Academic test is required by those who want to study a course which is taught in English in a foreign university. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking are four sections of the IELTS academic test.
- Listening Module: The Listening test covers four separate recordings and is 30 minutes long (10 minutes of transfer time is also there). In this test four different recordings are played. The first two audios are about everyday social context and the other two are based on education and training. You can only hear the audio once, based on these recordings aspirants have to answer questions in the form: multiple choice, form completion, note completion, summary completion, sentence completion, and short-answer questions.
- Reading: The reading section takes 60 minutes. The three long text sections in the test are taken from books, journals, magazines, or newspapers for a non-specialist audience. Students are required to write answers after careful scanning of the text provided.
- Writing: 60 minutes time is given for attempting writing modules in the IELTS test. The first task of the test requires you to describe, summarize or explain the information about a table, chart, or diagram in 150 words. The second task asks you to write a short essay in about 250 words in a formal style that is in response to a point of view, argument or problem.
- Speaking: The speaking module of the IELTS test is set for about 11-14 minutes. This section of the test is a face-to-face interview where test takers need to strike a conversation with the expert, and should be able to answer whatever the expert asks them randomly. The interview is prearranged more like a conversation between the examiner and the person giving the test. It makes you talk to the examiner openly on a familiar topic which is general in nature. A candidate is checked for confidence while speaking and good grammar. All speaking tests are recorded.
