Understanding your status

What H+, H-, and H+/− Mean for Your Visa

Don't let German jargon confuse you. Here's what each status means for your Germany application.

✅ H+
Fully Recognised — You're Clear
Your university is fully recognised by German authorities. Visa offices and universities accept your degree directly.
🟢 Visa processing is faster. No additional credential evaluation needed.
❌ H−
Not Recognised — But Not a Dead End
Your university is not listed as recognised. This complicates your application — but alternative paths exist.
🔴 You will need ZAB evaluation or APS. Our advisors have helped 200+ students in this situation.
⚠️ H+/−
Partial — Depends on Your Course
Your university is recognised for some courses but not all. Recognition depends on your specific degree program.
🟡 You must verify your specific course at the Anabin Abschlüsse level before applying.

Your university is listed — but does your course qualify?

Many Indian students are surprised to find their H+ university still causes visa issues because their specific degree isn't recognised. Our Germany advisors check both — at no cost to you.

If your university is H−

Your University is H− — Here's Your Path Forward

A H− status is a challenge, not a dead end. These are the three routes our advisors use.

1

Apply for ZAB Credential Evaluation

The Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) can evaluate your degree independently. A positive ZAB evaluation can substitute for Anabin H+ status in many cases.

2

Get Your APS Certificate

The Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) issues a certificate that verifies your academic credentials — required for Indian students and can help bypass H− issues.

3

Explore Studienkolleg (Bridging Course)

If your qualification isn't directly accepted, a Studienkolleg preparatory course followed by a Feststellungsprüfung exam can qualify you for German university admission.

Case Study
Preethi from DY Patil University (H+/−) was unsure if her specific engineering course qualified. Yes Germany checked the Abschlüsse-level status, confirmed it was H+, and she avoided a visa rejection that could have set her back 6 months.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

My university is H+ but I still heard I need APS. Is that true? +
Yes — Anabin and APS are two completely separate checks. Anabin confirms your university's recognition status. APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) is a document verification process required specifically for Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese students applying to German universities. You typically need both to be clear.
Can I still get a German student visa if my university is H+/−? +
Yes, but you need to go one step further — check your specific degree program (not just the university) in the Anabin Abschlüsse section. If your course-level status is H+, you're fine. Our advisors can do this check for you for free.
Does the Anabin status of my university change over time? +
Yes. The ZAB updates the Anabin database regularly — usually once or twice a year. Universities can be added, upgraded (H− to H+), or downgraded. Always check the database directly before submitting your application.
What is the difference between checking by university vs checking by degree? +
Anabin has two sections: Institutionen (institutions/universities) and Abschlüsse (degrees/qualifications). The university-level check tells you the overall recognition. The degree-level check is more specific — for H+/− universities, the degree-level check is essential.
My university is not in the Anabin list at all — what do I do? +
If your institution isn't listed, it hasn't been evaluated yet — not that it's automatically rejected. You can apply for a ZAB credential evaluation, which assesses your qualifications independently. Contact our advisors for free guidance.
