Requirements

LMU Admission Requirements for International Students

There is no single set of requirements applicable to every LMU programme. Requirements differ between Bachelor's and Master's, and programme-specific requirements matter.

🎓

Academic qualification

  • Bachelor's: a university admission qualification. Depending on the applicant's qualification, this may be a school-leaving certificate plus a university entrance examination certificate, or evidence of a year of higher-education study or a university certificate.
  • Master's: a recognised Bachelor's degree with relevant academic content
  • Programme-specific prerequisites and credits
🗣️

Language

  • Most Bachelor's programmes are German-taught and require German-language proof; the exact level and accepted certificate depend on the programme and admission route.
  • LMU's general information describes B2 as the minimum evidence at application in certain unrestricted-admission cases, followed by the required higher-level certificate for registration.
  • English-taught Master's, doctoral and double-degree programmes taught in English are the exception to the German requirement.
  • There is no university-wide IELTS/TOEFL score; English requirements are programme-specific.
📝

Aptitude, selection and tests

  • Some subjects have an aptitude assessment, pre-registration or study-orientation process, for which you must apply additionally, in time, via the respective institute.
  • Some programmes may require or recommend the GRE.
  • LMU has no university-wide GATE or GMAT requirement; some programmes use GMAT (e.g. Business Education Master's), while the regular M.Sc. Economics states GRE/GMAT are not required.
🗂️

Documents for International Office applications

  • Application form
  • University admission qualification, as an officially certified copy in the original language, with a certified translation (certificates in English and several other languages need no translation)
  • APS certificate for school-leaving certificates or degrees from India
  • Evidence of German proficiency (not for English-taught Master's, doctoral and double-degree programmes)
  • Updated CV
  • If you have studied before: all university certificates, diplomas and transcripts

Expert reports, letters of recommendation and internship certificates are not required when applying to the International Office; individual programmes may ask for a motivation letter, CV, references or other documents.

🎯

Numerus clausus (NC)

Popular programmes at LMU can be subject to admission restrictions, and LMU distinguishes national and local NC procedures.

APS verifies Indian educational documents. It should not be understood as the general mechanism by which LMU performs the final NC ranking.

Application

How to Apply to LMU from India

LMU explicitly says there is no single application procedure for all international students. Applicants without German nationality generally apply to the International Office; in certain cases they apply to the Office of the University Registrar (Studentenkanzlei) or the Foundation for University Admission (Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung), and a defined list of Master's programmes uses the online portal MoveIN.

  1. Choose your programme

Start on the official LMU programme page and confirm degree level, language of instruction, intake, admission procedure and requirements.

  2. Check programme-specific eligibility

Compare your qualification with the programme's academic, language, and selection or aptitude requirements.

  3. Check whether APS is required

LMU requires the APS certificate for applicants with school-leaving certificates or university degrees from India.

  4. Complete the programme's specified application procedure

Prepare the documents your programme lists. Complete programme-specific preliminary documentation only if it is explicitly required. For aptitude-assessment subjects, also register with the institute in time.

  5. Submit to the responsible LMU office, faculty or admission platform

The International Office, the Studentenkanzlei, the Foundation for University Admission, or MoveIN, depending on your programme.

  6. Complete any aptitude or selection procedure

Some programmes add tests, interviews or other selection steps.

  7. Receive admission

Follow the instructions in your admission notice.

  8. Complete registration / enrolment

Register and pay the semester contribution within the deadline your admission notice gives.

MoveIN Master's programmes: Allgemeine und vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Art History, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Buchwissenschaft, Chemistry, Epidemiology (winter semester), Germanistische Literaturwissenschaft, History, Informatics, Mathematics, Media Informatics, Mensch-Computer-Interaktion, Quantitative Economics (winter semester), Slavistik, Sociology (winter semester) and Statistics & Data Science.

Living costs

Cost of Living and Housing in Munich

Munich is an expensive student city. Actual monthly costs depend heavily on rent, health insurance, food, transport and lifestyle. Students should prepare a realistic budget using current LMU and Munich Student Union guidance.

🧾

Typical monthly expenses include

  • Accommodation
  • Food
  • Health insurance
  • Transportation (the semester fee no longer includes a transport ticket)
  • Phone and internet
  • Study materials
  • Personal expenses
🏠

Rent in Munich (LMU housing information)

Rooms in student housing€400–€600 / month
Rooms in shared apartments and single apartments€600–€1,100 / month
Rooms on the private market (average)About €750 / month

Advertised prices are usually basic rent (Kaltmiete) without utilities; expect a deposit (Kaution) of one to three months' basic rent.

🏢

University housing

LMU students can apply for university housing, much of which is managed by the Munich Student Union (Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern). Places are limited: only about 13% of Munich's roughly 100,000 students live in university housing, mostly in furnished single rooms with a shared kitchen.

📅

Start early, stay safe

  • Finding housing is hardest in September, October and November, at the start of the winter semester.
  • Options: student residences, shared apartments (WG), private rooms and apartments, and temporary accommodation on arrival.
  • Beware of fraud: never transfer deposits or rent before you are sure the room exists, and never email copies of your ID.
  • Admission to LMU does not automatically provide accommodation.
Locations

LMU Campuses and Study Locations

LMU has 125 buildings in and around Munich, and its campus development programme is bringing previously scattered faculties together on five large campus sites. The exact location depends on your programme, so check the location listed on your programme page.

For Indian students

What Makes the LMU Application Different for Indian Students

Indian applicants must meet LMU's general and programme-specific admission requirements. Depending on the programme, applicants may need an APS certificate, language certification and additional selection or aptitude requirements. LMU does not have one universal application procedure for all programmes.

🛂

APS Certificate

LMU requires the certificate from the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) at the German Embassy for applicants with school-leaving certificates and/or university degrees from India. APS verifies Indian academic documents and educational qualifications.

APS India ↗

📄

Preliminary documentation

LMU does not have a general VPD (uni-assist) requirement for Indian applicants. Complete programme-specific preliminary documentation only if your programme explicitly requires it, and submit your application through the route your programme specifies.

🎒

Documents for Bachelor's applicants

LMU asks for the university entrance qualification, which may consist of a school-leaving certificate plus a university entrance examination certificate or evidence of higher-education study, depending on the applicant's qualification, together with the APS certificate. These are not one universal checklist; follow your programme's requirements.

📚

Documents for Master's applicants

Applicants with Indian university degrees should submit the APS certificate along with university certificates and transcripts. Programme-specific requirements can add a motivation letter, CV, aptitude test, recommendation, specific credits, language proof or a selection interview.

🗣️

Language certification

For English-taught Master's, check your programme's English requirement; LMU has no single IELTS/TOEFL score for all programmes. German-taught programmes, including most Bachelor's, require German-language proof at the level and with the certificate your programme accepts.

🧪

GRE, GMAT and NC

Some Master's programmes may require or recommend the GRE, and some use GMAT; there is no university-wide GATE or GMAT requirement. Popular programmes can be admission-restricted (national or local NC); APS verifies documents and is not the NC ranking mechanism.
