Applying to a German university may involve more than choosing a programme and submitting an application. For many international applicants, Uni-Assist is part of the university application process — it evaluates international educational certificates on behalf of participating universities. Not every German university or programme uses it, and the exact procedure depends on the university, the programme and your applicant category.

Uni-Assist is the University Application Service for International Students, used by participating German universities to evaluate applications from international applicants. Depending on the university’s procedure, it may check your educational qualifications and documents, assess whether your application meets the stated requirements, and either forward an eligible application to the university or issue a VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation).
| Area | What you should know |
|---|---|
| Purpose | Evaluation of international applications and educational documents for participating German universities |
| Who may need it? | International applicants applying to universities or programmes that use Uni-Assist |
| Application portal | My assist |
| First application fee | €75 for the first chosen course of study in a semester |
| Additional applications | €30 for each additional chosen course of study in the same semester |
| Typical evaluation time | Usually around 4–6 weeks |
| Application decision | Made by the university, not Uni-Assist |
| Special procedure | Some universities require a VPD instead of direct forwarding through Uni-Assist |
Uni-Assist does not make the final admission decision. The university remains responsible for deciding whether to admit you.
Whether you need to use Uni-Assist depends on your chosen university, programme and applicant category. Some German universities use Uni-Assist for international applications, while others accept applications through their own portals. Even within the same university, different programmes or applicant groups may follow different procedures.
Before applying, check:
Do not assume that all applications to a Uni-Assist member university follow the same route. Always check the instructions published by the university for your particular programme.
| Your situation | Likely next step |
|---|---|
| University and programme require Uni-Assist | Apply through My assist |
| University requires a VPD | Request the VPD through Uni-Assist, then apply directly to the university |
| University accepts direct international applications | Apply through the university’s own portal |
| Unsure which route applies | Check the university’s official application instructions and Uni-Assist university information |
The documents required depend on your educational background, country of qualification, university and programme. Common documents may include:
Follow the requirements stated by your chosen university, and check the Uni-Assist country-by-country information for any additional rules relating to your educational background.
Document upload requirements. Prepare clear, complete and readable scans of the documents required for your chosen university and application route. Check the university or application portal for specific document requirements, file formats and submission instructions.
Uni-Assist charges handling fees for evaluating international educational certificates and application documents.
| Application | Handling fee |
|---|---|
| First chosen course of study | €75 |
| Each additional chosen course of study | €30 |
Worked example. Three chosen courses of study in the same semester: €75 + €30 + €30 = €135.
The fee applies to the processing and evaluation of the application, and is generally payable regardless of the result of the evaluation.
Some universities cover their applicants’ Uni-Assist handling fees. If this applies to your application, the relevant information should appear in My assist.
If you apply again for a new semester, the fee calculation starts again with €75 for the first chosen course of study.
If your chosen programme requires an application through Uni-Assist, the process generally follows these steps.
Start with the official website of your chosen university. Confirm the admission requirements, application route, required documents, language requirements, application deadline, and whether Uni-Assist or a VPD is required.
Register on the official My assist portal. Your account is used to create applications, upload documents, make the required payment and monitor your application status.
Search for the relevant university and course in My assist and create the appropriate application. Make sure you select the correct programme and semester.
Enter your personal and educational information carefully. The information in your application should correspond with your official academic documents.
Upload the documents required for your educational background and chosen programme. Check that every document is complete, clearly readable, correctly uploaded and submitted before the deadline.
Pay the applicable Uni-Assist handling fee — currently €75 for the first chosen course of study in a semester and €30 for each additional course.
After submitting, monitor progress through My assist. Uni-Assist will inform you when the evaluation result is available.
For a standard Uni-Assist application, an eligible application may be forwarded to the university. If your university uses the VPD procedure, you normally submit the VPD to the university yourself as part of a separate application.
Uni-Assist currently states that applicants will usually receive an evaluation result within approximately 4–6 weeks. Processing times can vary, particularly during busy application periods.
Uni-Assist therefore recommends submitting your application as early as possible and, where possible, at least eight weeks before the application deadline. That gives you time to respond if documents are missing or corrections are needed. All required documents must be uploaded before the relevant deadline.
Check the official deadlines and current processing times when planning your application.
A VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is preliminary review documentation issued by Uni-Assist for certain universities. It is not an admission letter.
If your university follows the VPD procedure, you normally apply through Uni-Assist for the VPD first, and then submit a separate application directly to the university according to its instructions.
The university’s application deadline still applies, so allow enough time for the VPD to be issued before submitting your university application.
The next step depends on the application procedure used by your university.
If the application meets the applicable requirements, Uni-Assist may forward it to the university, which makes the final admission decision.
You receive the VPD and then normally submit a separate application directly to the university according to its instructions.
In both cases, Uni-Assist does not make the final admission decision.
| Stage | What it means | Handled by |
|---|---|---|
| Uni-Assist evaluation | Checks your application against university requirements | Uni-Assist |
| VPD | Provides a preliminary assessment for universities using the VPD procedure | Uni-Assist |
| University admission | Makes the final admission decision | Individual university |
Understanding this distinction matters, because successfully completing the Uni-Assist evaluation does not automatically mean you have been admitted to the university.
For current application procedures, document requirements, deadlines and fees, always refer to the official Uni-Assist and university sources:
