The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is being introduced as an additional element in the APS documentation and verification process for selected Indian graduates applying for Master’s programmes in Germany.
The current requirement applies to relevant applicants planning to begin their Master’s studies in the Summer Semester 2027 or later, subject to applicable exemptions.

The dMAT requirement currently applies to selected Indian Master’s applicants whose previous Bachelor’s degree falls into one of these fields:
If your previous degree falls within one of these areas and you intend to begin your Master’s studies in Germany in the Summer Semester 2027 or a later intake, the dMAT with the General Academic Module is currently required as part of the APS documentation process, unless an applicable exemption applies.

The dMAT requirement is being introduced as part of a new process, so applicants should check the latest APS India guidance before submitting their application.
The current dMAT requirement does not apply to every Indian student. According to the current APS India guidance, the requirement does not apply to:
There are also transitional exemptions for applicants who completed their APS online registration or shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026, subject to the conditions specified by APS India.
Applicants who have already completed the APS process and received their APS certificate are also not required to take the dMAT for that completed APS procedure.
Important: dMAT requirements and exemptions may be updated. Check the latest APS India dMAT guidance to determine whether the requirement applies to your individual situation.
The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardised academic aptitude test developed by universities in collaboration with g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung).
The test assesses general study aptitude and, through its subject modules, evaluates how candidates apply relevant academic knowledge to problems. The dMAT consists of a Core Module and a Subject Module.
For applicants covered by the current Indian requirement, the dMAT is an additional element of the APS documentation and verification process. It does not replace the APS process itself.
APS India remains responsible for verifying academic documents, while g.a.s.t. administers the dMAT and issues the dMAT certificate.
Applicants who are required to take the dMAT must submit the dMAT certificate as part of their APS documentation. APS India can issue the APS certificate only after the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.
Applicants may submit their other required APS documents before the dMAT certificate becomes available. However, the APS certificate will only be issued once the required dMAT certificate has also been submitted and verified.
The dMAT should therefore be treated as one part of the overall APS process, alongside the other documents and requirements specified by APS India.
The dMAT consists of two modules: a Core Module and a Subject Module. For applicants covered by the current Indian APS requirement, the relevant Subject Module is the General Academic Module.
The Core Module assesses general study aptitude and cognitive skills through three subtests. The official preparation materials cover task types, including:
These tasks assess cognitive abilities such as recognising patterns, working with mathematical relationships, and applying logical reasoning.
The General Academic Module is the Subject Module currently used for the affected Indian applicants. It assesses the ability to apply cognitive and analytical skills to academic problems, with an emphasis on applying and transferring knowledge rather than simply recalling information.
The complete dMAT examination takes approximately three and a half hours, including a break between the two modules.
After taking the test, candidates receive a dMAT certificate issued by g.a.s.t. The certificate reports:
The dMAT score is reported on a scale from 0 to 200, with an average of 100. The percentile rank indicates how your result compares with those of other test takers.
Universities decide independently how they use dMAT results in their selection processes. There is therefore no single universal dMAT score that guarantees admission to every German university.
The dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely.
For applicants covered by the Indian APS requirement, the dMAT certificate forms part of the APS documentation, and the result is reflected on the APS certificate.
The dMAT is currently conducted in English, including the General Academic Module used in the Indian APS process.
The language of the dMAT should not be confused with the language requirements of your Master’s programme. Depending on the programme, a university may separately require proof of:
Always check the language requirements of your intended university and Master’s programme before applying.
The current schedule for the first dMAT administration in India is:
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Registration begins | 29 June 2026 |
| Registration deadline | 15 September 2026 |
| dMAT test | 26 September 2026 |
| Certificate available | 12 October 2026 |
The test is being offered at selected g.a.s.t. test centres in India, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. The final availability of test centres is shown during registration.
Registration, payment, test-centre booking and certificate issuance are handled by g.a.s.t.
Dates and procedures may change. Check the official dMAT and APS India websites for the latest schedule before registering.
If the current dMAT requirement applies to you, follow these steps:
Check whether your previous Bachelor’s degree and intended Master’s intake fall under the current dMAT requirement.
Review the current APS guidance to determine whether an applicable exemption applies to you.
Complete the official registration process through g.a.s.t. and select an available test centre.
Use the official dMAT preparation materials to familiarise yourself with the test format and question types.
Complete the required modules according to the official test instructions.
Your dMAT certificate will be issued through the g.a.s.t. participant portal.
Submit the dMAT certificate as part of your APS documentation and provide the other required documents according to the applicable APS checklist.
Continue with your university applications while meeting the academic, language, and other admission requirements of your chosen German Master’s programmes.
dMAT preparation should begin with understanding the official test structure and question types.
Familiarise yourself with the Core Module and General Academic Module, including the types of tasks you can expect.
The official dMAT website provides sample tasks, solutions, preparation materials and videos to help candidates understand the different question types.
Practise recognising patterns, interpreting information, identifying relationships and solving problems logically. Focus on applying knowledge to problems rather than simply recalling facts.
The dMAT is a timed digital examination. Regular timed practice can help you become more comfortable with the pace and digital format of the test.
dMAT preparation is only one part of your Germany application. Continue checking your APS requirements, academic documents, university admission criteria, and language requirements separately.
The dMAT, APS verification, and university admission are separate parts of the Germany application process.
| dMAT | APS | University admission |
|---|---|---|
| Academic aptitude test | Verification of academic documents | Evaluation of your application for a specific programme |
| Administered by g.a.s.t. | Handled by APS India | Handled by the individual university |
| Required for applicants covered by the current dMAT requirement | Required where APS certification applies | Depends on the university and programme |
| Result is provided through a dMAT certificate | APS issues the APS certificate | University decides whether you meet its admission requirements |
Having a dMAT result or APS certificate does not by itself guarantee admission to a German Master’s programme. You must still meet the individual university’s academic, language, and other admission requirements.
